the bell we turn to jackie at cnbc world headquarters. jackie, good morning. >> good morning to you, marla. well, the futures are modestly higher after stocks eked out small gains yesterday. first we saw investors were cheered on by positive economic data on private sector job growth and the services sector, but that was offset by hp. the company issuing a disappointing earnings forecast. right now the european market there in the red and as i mentioned futures a little higher here. in the u.s. we'll get data on unemployment. meantime the dow rose 12 points yesterday to 13,494. the nasdaq up 15 points to 3,135. >>> gas prices typically fall after labor day, but if you live on the east or west coast like us, you haven't seen those declines just yet. drivers in california paid $4.23 a gallon on wednesday. that was 45 cents higher than the national average. while prices at the northeast are at or near highs for the year. in the bay area it is near $4.30 per gallon. pipeline problems is driving up prices in states that usually have some of the highest prices in the country anyway. >> don't we
